Vibram Soles: Made for Every Kind of Footwear
Vibram has been making soles since 1937, when founder Vitale Bramani introduced the first rubber lug sole for mountaineering boots. Today, the yellow octagon can be found on everything from mountain boots and trail running shoes to classic work boots, sneakers and dress shoes, with a different sole and rubber compound for almost every kind of footwear and use.
Grip: Vibram designs its tread patterns and rubber compounds around the way footwear is used, from deep lugs that bite into mud and rock to grippy trail running outsoles and lower-profile treads for city streets.
Durability: Vibram rubber is renowned for being hard-wearing, so a Vibram resole can add years to the life of your footwear. And because the soles are solid rubber, they don’t crumble with age the way the polyurethane midsoles in many older hiking boots do.
Choice: With a huge range of Vibram soles to choose from, we can usually match the look and feel of the original soles, or upgrade them to something grippier, more durable or better suited to the way you use your footwear.
Our Vibram Resole Service
Every Vibram resole starts with a careful look at how your footwear is made, whether the soles are stitched into place (Goodyear-welted or Blake-stitched), glued to a midsole or built as a cup sole that wraps up around the sides. That tells us which Vibram soles will work and the right way to fit them.
We fit full-length Vibram soles and heels, Vibram cup soles, Vibram outer soles bonded to new or repaired midsoles, and thin Vibram sole protectors. Here are the main types of Vibram soles we fit, along with before and after photos of our work.
Boots & Shoes
Vibram soles for work boots, dress shoes and heels, from chunky lugs to slim, low-profile soles.
Classic lugged soles
Deep, chunky lugs offer dependable grip on wet streets, gravel and trails. A classic upgrade for work, Chelsea and casual boots.
Recessed lug soles
Lugs set in from the edge of the sole offer enhanced traction while maintaining a slim profile around the sides. Ideal for dress and western boots.
Wedge soles
Wedge soles, such as the classic Vibram Christy, are light and comfortable for long days on your feet. A favourite for moc toe and work boots.
Dress shoe soles
Slim Vibram rubber soles and heels give dress shoes and loafers grip and durability, without the bulk of a heavier tread.
Sole protectors
Thin Vibram rubber sole protectors are installed on leather soles, for enhanced traction and longevity. Includes red protectors made for Louboutins.
Performance & Outdoor Footwear
Hiking boots and trail runners rebuilt from the midsoles down, with Vibram soles made for the trail.
Hiking cup soles
When soles are heavily worn or polyurethane midsoles crumble with age, we replace them with one-piece Vibram rubber cup soles that wrap up around the sides of the uppers.
Hiking custom soles
For welted hiking footwear, we rebuild the new soles in layers: lightweight EVA midsoles topped with harder wearing, rubber Vibram outer soles.
Trail running soles
If the midsoles are still in good shape, worn-out running shoes don't need replacing. We level off the old outer soles and bond new Vibram running soles over the top.
Sneakers
Vibram soles that bring worn-out sneakers back to life.
Sneaker cup soles
When a sneaker's soles are heavily worn, we remove the soles completely and replace them with new cup soles, which wrap up around the sides.
Sneaker unit soles
For sneakers with moulded soles, we replace the entire sole unit, including the midsole and outer sole, with a new Vibram unit sole.
Sneaker overlaid soles
Where a sneaker sole's surface tread has worn thin, we retread the soles — levelling off the midsoles and installing new Vibram outer soles over the top.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's all very quick and easy — promise!
- Complete our online order form, where you'll be able to upload photos and describe the work you'd like done. You'll get an instant quote based on your selection and then choose to either proceed with an order or request a custom quote.
- Once we've reviewed your order, we'll email you instructions for getting your footwear to us. If you live in Sydney, you'll have the option to drop it off at our workshop. Otherwise, you'll be able to drop it off at a local Australia Post office, where it will be packaged and shipped over to us for free.
- Once we receive your footwear, we'll resole it and return it to you by courier.
The cost of a Vibram resole depends on the footwear and the work involved. As a guide:
- Vibram sole protectors start at $79 (half-length) and $129 (full-length).
- Full rubber resoles with Vibram soles start at $179.
Actual prices quoted vary based on an assessment of the work needed on any particular pair of shoes or boots. Simply complete our order form to get a free diagnosis/quote for your pair.
The time it takes to complete a Vibram resole varies depending on the particular work required and the workload in the workshop when your footwear is received.
We are generally able to fit Vibram sole protectors within 1-2 weeks, and complete most Vibram resoles within 2-3 weeks, of receiving footwear at the workshop. Turnaround times can be longer when cup soles or midsoles are being replaced.
If you will be using our free shipping service (rather than dropping off and picking up your footwear at the workshop), then you should also factor in shipping time via Australia Post. This varies depending on your location, but generally takes no more than a few business days if you're in a metropolitan area and otherwise up to 5 business days (if you're in a regional or remote area).
Almost any shoe or boot with uppers in good condition can be resoled with Vibram soles, including hiking boots, trail running shoes, work and heritage boots, sneakers and dress shoes.
The right Vibram sole, and the right way to fit it, depends on how your footwear is made: whether the soles are stitched into place (e.g. Goodyear-welted or Blake-stitched), glued to a midsole, or built as a cup sole that wraps up around the sides. If you're not sure, simply upload photos with your order and we'll recommend the best option.
Yes. If you have a particular Vibram sole in mind, such as the Vibram 100, the Christy wedge, the Montagna or a specific hiking or trail running sole, let us know in your order form submission. If it suits your footwear and we can source it in your size, we'll fit it. Otherwise, we'll recommend the closest available alternative.
Yes, hiking boots with crumbling soles can often be resoled. Many hiking boots have polyurethane (PU) midsoles, which break down with age through a process called hydrolysis. This causes the soles to crumble or peel away, often while the uppers are still in great condition.
We remove the failed outer soles and midsoles, and then rebuild the boots with new Vibram soles: either full Vibram rubber cup soles, or new lightweight EVA midsoles with Vibram outer soles. See our Scarpa and Zamberlan case studies for examples.
Yes. As a Vibram Certified Repair Center, we use genuine Vibram soles, heels and sole protectors. We also use parts manufactured by other brands where appropriate, so be sure to specify any preference you have for Vibram products in your order form submission. We'll then take this into account in preparing our assessment / quote.
Vibram soles are hard-wearing and low-maintenance. Brush off mud and grit after use, and clean the soles with water and a soft brush. Let wet footwear dry naturally, away from heaters, fires and direct sun, as heat can damage the rubber and the adhesives holding the soles in place. Between wears, store your footwear somewhere cool and dry.
Once you submit your online order form, you'll be given a token that allows you to track everything online, throughout the process of getting your footwear resoled.
And whenever your footwear is in transit (whether on its way to our workshop via Australia Post or on the way back to you via courier), you'll have a parcel tracking number and receive real-time shipping notifications by email.
Yes, you can drop off and pick up your shoes at our workshop in Martin Place, Sydney provided that:
- You first complete your order online;
- You let us know (in the order form or by follow up email) that you'd like to drop off and/or pick up at the workshop; and
- We have emailed you a ticket that you'll need to print out and hand over at the workshop for ID and proof of payment.
