The boots
The midsoles on these Scarpa Kailash Trek hiking boots were disintegrating, with the outer soles having fallen right off. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to perform a full resole, replacing the old soles with a new pair of Vibram rubber cup soles.

The lightweight midsoles had disintegrated, causing the foam to break apart, the bond holding the outer soles in place to fail, and the outer soles to in turn fall right off. This is a common problem with hiking boots, particularly when the soles are made with polyurethane, to keep the soles lightweight and flexible. This material tends to eventually succumb to hydrolysis — a chemical process that causes the material to degrade and eventually break off.
The midsoles were beyond repair, so began by carefully removing the whole of each sole from the uppers and thoroughly cleaning the surfaces around the bottom of each boot, to remove the old glue, the crumbling foam, and any accumulated dirt / debris.
We then selected a new pair of Vibram rubber cup soles suitable for hiking boots (the Vibram Clusaz soles in this case), making sure they fit these particular boots. We carefully prepared the surfaces and used a specialist adhesive to securely bond the soles to the footbeds and around the sides of the uppers. The use a specialist, ‘balloon press’ was instrumental in allowing us to get a secure seal around the sidewalls of the soles. The new soles feature a deep, lugged tread, helping to significantly enhance traction on rugged terrains. They are also made entirely of rubber, so they are not prone to disintegrating or breaking apart as the original soles were.
