The shoes

These Church's shoes were brand new, but the leather soles were unprotected and prone to accelerated wear. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to install a pair of brass toe plates to protect the soles where they tend to wear down the fastest.

Toe plate installation

We began by carefully cutting into the leather at the toe of the soles to create a recessed area, into which we could then securely screw a pair of brass toe plates. Once in place, we carefully ground down the edges of the plates to match the contours of the soles, for a seamless finish.

Although toe plates are not always flush-mounted, we followed the customer’s request to do so in this case. While this approach is more labor-intensive and costly, it ensures the plates do not alter the boots’ profile or produce excessive noise when walking. Flush-mounting requires precise, hand-cutting of the original leather soles — a delicate process that demands great attention to detail. While most toe plates can be adjusted to fit the leather soles, we take extra care to avoid cutting into the stitching. In some cases, this may affect how entirely flush the plates sit, but it helps maintain the integrity and durability of the soles.
