The shoes
These Gucci classic loafers were in desperate needs of rejuvenation, with the soles and heels worn flat, the leather torn right through on one side, and the leather insoles so brittle they were starting to crack and tear. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis / quote, we offered to perform a full resole, repair the tear, and replace the leather insoles.
Full resole and reheel
We began by removing the soles. We then stitched a new pair of rubber midsoles directly into the footbed (i.e. the base of the shoes) and adhered into place against that midsole a new pair of Vibram Lienz rubber soles — these soles are a popular choice among our customers, known for offering excellent durability as well as traction for lower-profile men’s dress shoes and loafers.
Tear repair
Once we had removed the old soles, we had direct access to the base of the shoes (i.e. the footbed). We were able to then use a thin leather patch to seal up the tear and fold that patch over the base of the footbed before the new midsoles were then stitched into place. In this way, we were able to seal up the tear and reinforce the area against further damage — and do so without any visible sign of repair.
Insole replacement
We carefully removed the original insoles and replaced them with a new pair of premium, German-made Tacco insoles. While these are pre-made, we custom-cut them based on the shape of the original insoles before adhering them into place inside the shoes.
