The bag
This Chloé Mini Tess Day bag had seen better days, as the leather was scuffed and discoloured and the main latch heavily scratched and faded. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to clean, condition and custom recolour the leather as well as re-plate the hardware.
Leather colour restoration
We cleaned and conditioned the leather to remove accumulated dirt / impurities and to ensure the leather was nourished and healthy. We then custom mixed a colour based on the existing and used that to touch up those areas where the leather had been scuffed or stained and so discoloured.
Hardware re-plating
We began by cleaning the closure latch at the front of the bag to prepare the metal for the re-plating process. We then used special equipment to plate the metal, using an electrical charge to bond consecutive layers of 24k gold to the surface of the metal.
While this allowed us to restore much of the lost colour, it did not result in a full restoration of the latch. This is mainly because of the condition of the latch itself, which made abrasive polishing (needed to smooth the surface of otherwise scratched / worn metal) impossible and likewise prevented us from achieving a perfectly consistent finish with the plating,
