Shoe Resole Services

A shoe sole replacement (or ‘resole’) becomes necessary when the soles on shoes are too worn to be simply repaired. A resole involves covering the shoes with new soles, and this happens after all or part of the old soles are either removed or else repaired and then reinforced with thin rubber soles over the top.

Our shoe resole service covers a variety of types of resoles, including on Goodyear-welted, Blake-stitched and cemented shoes. And we use a range of premium leather and rubber soles manufactured by trusted brands — including Vibram, Goodyear, Dainite, Itshide, JR Rendenbach, TOPY and Casali.

The ideal type of resole performed on any given pair of shoes depends on a few factors, including the shoe’s construction and the length and composition of the new soles. Read on to learn more.

Full sole replacement

Full Resole / Full Sole Replacement

A full resole involves replacing the old soles along the entire length of each shoe with a new pair of leather or rubber full soles. The old soles are either removed entirely or repaired before being reinforced with a pair of overlaid rubber soles. Where the heel blocks are separate to the soles, the heel caps are replaced as part of the same service.

Some shoes are easier to fully resole by design, because they are made with detachable heel blocks and midsoles or welts — i.e. a separate layer (between the soles and uppers) of leather or other sturdy material from which old soles can be removed without damaging the body of the shoes, and to which new soles can be stitched or glued into place as needed. These shoes are referred to as “Goodyear-welted” or “Blake-stitched”. Most other shoes can also be fully resoled, although this typically involves a workaround solution or additional work.

While half resoles are available as cost-effective alternatives to full resoles, full soles are generally preferred because they soles tend to last longer than half soles and offer greater aesthetic appeal.

Half sole replacement

Half Resole / Half Sole Replacement

A half resole involves replacing part of the old soles (usually the part that touches the ground) with new leather or rubber half soles. The old soles are either removed entirely or repaired before being reinforced with a pair of overlaid rubber soles.

While half soles offer a cost-effective alternative to full soles, particularly where the heels are not too worn down, full resoles are generally recommended because they tend to last longer and offer greater aesthetic appeal than half resoles.

If your are looking for extra protection for your new soles, consider the following services.

Shoe sole protectors

Sole Protectors

Sole protectors are thin, hard-wearing rubber soles made to be installed over the main soles on shoes for significantly enhanced longevity and traction on otherwise slippery surfaces — without disturbing the original aesthetic of the shoes. These protective soles are generally recommended for shoes with main soles that are prone to wear (usually leather soles) and either brand new or not yet too heavily worn.

Shoe toe plates

Toe Plates

Toe plates are installed on the front of soles (usually wear-prone leather soles) to protect them where they otherwise tend to wear fastest. These are available in rubber, steel or brass and either installed over the top of a new pair of soles or flush with the rest of the soles.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's all very quick and easy — promise!

  1. Complete our online order form, where you'll be able to upload photos and describe the work you'd like done to the shoes. You'll get an instant quote based on your selection and then choose to either proceed with an order or request a custom quote.
  2. Once we've reviewed your order, we'll email you instructions for getting your shoes to us. If you live in Sydney, you'll have the option to drop the shoes off at our workshop. Otherwise, you'll be able to drop them off at a local Australia Post office, where they'll be packaged and shipped over to us for free.
  3. Once we receive your shoes, we'll resole and return them to you by courier.

The cost of a shoe resole varies widely depending on the actual work performed. A half resole can cost as little as $79 while a full resole generally costs $179. This pricing range covers the vast majority of resoles.

However, in all cases, the exact cost depends largely on the materials used and factors affecting the amount of time required to perform the work. For example, resoling shoes with nailed soles is generally more expensive than resoling shoes with glued or stitched soles. And opting for premium JR Rendenbach or Dainite soles, rather than a regular Vibram resole, adds $20–30 to the total cost of the resole.

Further work on the soles, such as the installation of sole protectors or toe plates for enhanced longevity, could add anywhere between $49 and $99 to the total cost of the resole.

Simply complete our order form to get a free diagnosis/quote based on your particular requirements.

The time it takes to complete a sole replacement varies depending on the particular work required and the workload in the workshop when the shoes are received.

We are generally able to complete basic sole replacements within 1-2 weeks of receiving shoes at the workshop. This extends to 2-3 weeks for most specialist resoles and longer for more complex resoles.

If you will be using our free shipping service (rather than dropping off and picking up your shoes at the workshop), then you should also factor in shipping time via Australia Post. This varies depending on your location, but generally takes no more than a few business days if you're in a metropolitan area and otherwise up to 5 business days (if you're in a regional or remote area).

Once you submit your online order form, you'll be given a token that allows you to track everything online, throughout the process of getting your shoes resoled.

And whenever your shoes are in transit (whether on their way to our workshop via Australia Post or on the way back to you via courier), you'll have a parcel tracking number and receive real-time shipping notifications by email.

Yes, you can drop off and pick up your shoes at our workshop in Martin Place, Sydney provided that:

  1. You first complete your order online;
  2. You let us know (in the order form or by follow up email) that you'd like to drop off and/or pick up at the workshop; and
  3. We have emailed you a ticket that you'll need to print out and hand over at the workshop for ID and proof of payment.
