JR Leather Soles: A Premium Option
JR (J. Rendenbach) Leather soles are renowned for their quality and durability, making them a popular choice for premium shoes and boots. While leather soles look and (at least after some wear) feel great, opting for leather over rubber typically involves sacrificing durability. But this is not always the case. When customers are looking for a premium resole option, we recommend JR leather soles.
Durability: JR Leather soles are renowned for their ability to withstand extensive wear and tear, ensuring performance and reliability well beyond that offered by alternative leather options. Whereas rubber soles are generally recommended for footwear worn regularly or in urban environments, JR Leather soles consistently prove themselves to be durable and dependable in various environments.
Comfort: As with most leather sole options, JR Leather soles are naturally flexible and, unlike rubber soles, gradually mould to the contours of the wearer’s feet. This makes for an exceptionally comfortable wearing experience, reducing fatigue and allowing for extended wear without discomfort.
Elegance: JR Leather soles offer unmatched aesthetic appeal, enhancing the overall look of shoes with their luxurious texture and refined finish. The rich, natural tones of JR Leather soles add sophistication and elegance to any pair of shoes. Whether paired with formal attire or casual outfits, shoes with JR Leather soles make a stylish statement, showcasing impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Our JR Leather Resole Service
The status of a ‘premium’ sole depends on the workmanship involved in its use during a resole. Our team of experienced cobblers are the best at what they do and a trusted option for generations of Australians seeking the highest standards in footwear repairs, including JR Leather sole replacements.
Full JR Leather Resole
We completely remove the old soles along the entire length of each shoe and then stitch into place a new pair of full-length JR Leather soles. We also reheel the shoes, replacing the heel caps with ‘dovetail’ JR Leather heels, made from both leather and rubber.
Half JR Leather Resole
We remove parts of the old soles (those that touch the ground) and replace them with half-length JR Leather soles. We also reheel the shoes, replacing the heel caps with ‘dovetail’ JR Leather heels, made from a combination of leather and rubber.
About JR Leather
JR Leather products are made by a family-owned tannery in Trier, Germany where the art of leather production has been carefully perfected since 1871. The leather is made from cattle raised in the Austrian Alps, and the production process involves using natural extracts from oak tree barks and other plant sources to tan the leather.
The intricate and protracted manufacturing process produces in a uniquely tight grain that makes the leather waterproof and highly resistant to wear, and yet no less flexible, breathable, comfortable or aesthetically appealing than other leathers. The process is also environmentally friendly, relying heavily on natural materials rather than the synthetic materials typically used in the production of other leathers.
JR Leather soles are commonly used in manufacturing and repairing high-end footwear, usually by brands and cobblers prioritising quality and longevity. Due to the superior product quality and craftsmanship needed, making or repairing footwear with JR leather soles is typically more expensive. But for many consumers, they are without doubt a smart and worthwhile investment.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's all very quick and easy — promise!
- Complete our online order form, where you'll be able to upload photos and describe the work you'd like done to the shoes. You'll get an instant quote based on your selection and then choose to either proceed with an order or request a custom quote.
- Once we've reviewed your order, we'll email you instructions for getting your shoes to us. If you live in Sydney, you'll have the option to drop the shoes off at our workshop. Otherwise, you'll be able to drop them off at a local Australia Post office, where they'll be packaged and shipped over to us for free.
- Once we receive your shoes, we'll resole and return them to you by courier.
The cost of a JR Leather shoe resole varies widely depending on the actual work performed. A half resole can cost as little as $169 while a full resole (which includes replacement of the heel caps with JR Leather 'dovetail' heel caps) generally costs $299. A reheel with JR Leather heel caps, on its own, starts at $129.
Simply complete our order form to get a free diagnosis/quote based on your particular requirements.
The time it takes to complete a JR Leather resole varies depending on the particular work required and the workload in the workshop when the shoes are received.
We are generally able to complete basic JR Leather sole replacements within 2-3 weeks of receiving shoes at the workshop. This extends to 3-4 weeks for most specialist recrafts and longer for more complex recraft and restoration work.
If you will be using our free shipping service (rather than dropping off and picking up your shoes at the workshop), then you should also factor in shipping time via Australia Post. This varies depending on your location, but generally takes no more than a few business days if you're in a metropolitan area and otherwise up to 5 business days (if you're in a regional or remote area).
JR Leather soles are suitable for a variety of different types of footwear, including shoes and boots. However, we generally recommend them only for shoes / boots with a Goodyear-welted or Blake-stitched construction — i.e. where the soles are stitched into place.
We offer a variety of customisation options for JR Leather soles. This includes custom recolouring the leather, decorating the soles with brass tacks, using specific colours for stitching threads, and closed channel stitching (where the stitching thread around the bottom of the soles is hidden). If particular customisation options are of interest, then let us know while completing your order.
As with any leather, regular maintenance is important. To keep the leather healthy, use a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris from the surface of the soles and then use a mild leather conditioner to nourish the leather, keeping it supple and resistant to accelerated wear. Keep your soles (and the rest of your shoes / boots) away from excessive moisture and damp environments, to prevent the growth of mould or mildew. And if possible, rotate between shoes to allow your JR Leather soles to rest in between wears.
Once you submit your online order form, you'll be given a token that allows you to track everything online, throughout the process of getting your shoes resoled.
And whenever your shoes are in transit (whether on their way to our workshop via Australia Post or on the way back to you via courier), you'll have a parcel tracking number and receive real-time shipping notifications by email.
Yes, you can drop off and pick up your shoes at our workshop in Martin Place, Sydney provided that:
- You first complete your order online;
- You let us know (in the order form or by follow up email) that you'd like to drop off and/or pick up at the workshop; and
- We have emailed you a ticket that you'll need to print out and hand over at the workshop for ID and proof of payment.
