The handbag
This Louis Vuitton Twist bag is designed with a strong epi leather to maximise space within the bag and withstand the sort of wear we see on bags constructed with softer leathers. However, the strength of the leather on this bag was also its weakness, with the leather’s relative inflexibility causing a tear at the seam around the bottom of the bag. When this customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to repair the torn leather.
Leather tear repair
We started off by cleaning the leather edging around the torn leather panel, which had accumulated dirt and glue from a repair attempted by the customer at home. Because the leather was torn and in fact an epi leather, which is thicker and firmer than other leathers, we couldn’t stitch the torn leather back into place. Instead, we installed a discrete leather patch on the inside of the bag, around the affected seam. We finally glued the torn leather back into place, against the new patch. This left us with a newly clean seam, while the interior patch allowed for greater flexibility in the leather around the seam and reinforced it.
