The boots

These Bally knee-length boots were in great shape but a little too tight around the wearer’s calves. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to make them wider around the top by installing a pair of v-shaped elastic gussets.

It is common for boots to fit perfectly around a wearer’s feet but end up being too loose or tight around the calves. In these cases, there are usually a few options. When the calves are loose, they can be ‘taken in’ — usually by undoing the main seam and then taking leather away before re-stitching the seam into place. When the calves are tight, they can be ‘taken out’ — either by stretching the leather around the calves with specialised equipment or by installing gussets or zippers to create space. In this case, we recommended and the customer opted for a pair of gussets.

Elastic gusset installation

We started off by confirming with the customer how much wider the boots would need to be around the very top. We then created an opening on the inside of each boot, carefully cutting the leather and tapering the opening to a point about three-quarters down the boots. We then installed a pair of elastic gussets between the outer and inner layers of the boot uppers, glueing and stitching around the gussets to secure them into place.
