The boots
The heel caps and rubber soles on these RM Williams Comfort Craftsman boots had worn out — even though the original rubber soles themselves had been covered with a pair of thin protective rubber soles over the top. When this customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to re-heel the boots and perform either a full re-sole or half re-sole, with the customer choosing the latter.
Half rubber re-sole
We removed the old protective rubber soles, which were largely redundant as they were protecting original soles also made of rubber, and then proceeded to remove the old original soles all the way back to about an inch before the heels, at which point we sliced the soles to a point. We then cut a new pair of rubber half soles from a high-quality Topy rubber and stitched them into place, slicing them in the opposite direction at the ends so that the new soles sat flush with the old. We finally added a few short nails at the ends of the soles, to ensure they hold securely in place, and then coloured over them to reduce their visibility.
Half re-soles are an economical option, allowing us to perform a relatively straightforward repair using high-quality, hard-wearing rubbers that work well with RM Williams boots. However, where possible (the additional cost permitting), we generally recommend full re-soles, where we replace the heels and soles along the entire length of each boot with original RM Williams rubber heels and single-piece soles. While the half soles do last a long time without any issues, they do involve cutting the original single-piece soles in two, so the single-piece soles tend to last much longer.
Re-heel
With the new half soles in place, we replaced the old, worn RM Williams heel caps with entirely new ones.
