SoleHeeled offers convenient and affordable Prada handbag repairs by Australia’s best craftsmen, with free shipping to your door. This case study outlines how we recently repaired a customer’s Prada handbag.
The bag
This retro Prada tote bag had served its owner well over many years, but it had worn down with age and use and become a mere shadow of its former self — in particular, the leather looked particularly tired, while the straps had frayed and started to tear away from the bag.
When this customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered not only to clean and condition the leather to get it looking and feeling fresh, but also to repair the existing (and otherwise irreplaceable) straps and then reinforce them to prevent similar damage from befalling the bag in the future.
Leather cleaning and conditioning
Before we proceeded with any other work, we cleaned and conditioned the leather throughout the bag to nourish the leather and get it looking and feeling young and supple. This involved special work on straps, where they attached to the bag, as some dirt had accumulated in gaps left by the torn leather and the frayed stitching needed to be cleaned up. This was a necessary step before proceeding to properly repair and reinforce the straps.
Strap repair and reinforcement
We knew there was no way to replace these straps, and while we could clean up the straps and get them looking as they did originally, that alone would not guarantee that the straps simply would not tear in the future with continued use of the bag — due to the bag's design and construction, it was clear that the joints between the straps and the bag were carrying all the weight and pressure while the bag was being carried around. And so we proceeded to repair the straps, and then went one step further and reinforced the straps by wrapping them at their base with strong pieces of leather that would help to distribute some of the weight/pressure.
