The bag
The vachetta leather shoulder strap on this Louis Vuitton Blois bag was cracking around those areas where it bends, leaving it close to tearing apart. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis / quote, we offered to replace the strap with an entirely new one.
Strap replacement
We removed the old strap and used it as a template in crafting a new strap. This involved cutting strips from a fresh piece of vachetta leather, treating that leather to produce a patina similar to that on the original strap, glueing the leather strips together before stitching along the sides, and using a red ink on the edges to finish them. We then installed the original shoulder pad, which remained in good shape, on the new strap and then stitched the strap into place on the original leather strap mounts with D-rings at either side of the bag.
We generally offer to replace straps as a last resort, when repairing or restoring the original straps is impossible. In this case, the old leather had become so dry that it was irreversibly cracking. As always, prevention is better than cure, so it is best to avoid letting the leather (especially the sort of vachetta leather on Louis Vuitton bags) get too dry. We do this by regularly nourishing the leather with a specialist conditioner.
