The shoes

The leather soles and quarter-rubber heels on these Church’s leather ankle books were worn all the way through. When this customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis / quote, we offered to perform a full re-sole, replacing the heels and soles along the entire length of each shoe with full leather soles and quarter-rubber heels (like the originals).

Full leather re-sole

We started off by removing the old heel blocks and soles. The leather soles were originally stitched into place, but even the stitching had worn through in this case, so removing the soles was relatively straightforward. Once the soles were off, we stitched a pair of high-quality leather soles into the welt (which is the layer of leather that sits between the soles and the leather uppers, allowing for the shoes to be readily re-soled as needed) and then sanded down the sides of the new soles so that they sat flush with the welt and the rest of the shoes. With the soles set, we then hand polish the leather soles to further seal the leather and create a pleasing finish.

Quarter rubber re-heel

With the old heel blocks removed, we then proceeded to remove the heel caps (the outermost layer of the heel blocks) with entirely new heel caps — specifically, quarter-rubber heel caps (so called because they are composed mainly of leather with rubber at the rear, where the caps tend to wear first, for greater longevity). These were glued into place with a heavy duty glue and then, as with the soles, sanded down around the edges and reattached to the rest of the shoes.
