Leather trim replacement
We began by removing the old leather trim, unstitching it along the seam. We then took a similar, fresh piece of premium leather and cut a strip to match the size of the old trim. We then treated the leather with a conditioner, nourishing it to make it supple and easier to bend and shape around the top rim of the bag. With everything set, we then stitched the new trim into place.
As with any work involving the replacement of an entire leather trim, there are a few trade-offs:
The first concerns identifying a leather sufficiently similar to the existing — with vachetta leathers in particular, which develop a patina with age and thus change colour over time, we strive to use a leather as close as possible to existing leather (although this might differ from the leather’s original colour).
The second concerns the loss of factory finish. Louis Vuitton install leather trims on bags before they’re constructed and so have the benefit of doing so on flat surfaces using sophisticated machinery that aftermarket repairers generally do not have. Few handbag repairers have the tools and skillset needed to hand stitch or machine stitch (as needed) leather around bags.
