The bag
This vintage Gucci bag had become effectively unusable, with one of the strap mounts missing, the piping torn, and the inner lining disintegrating. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to replace the strap mount, repair the piping and replace the inner lining.
Lining replacement
We began by deconstructing the bag, disassembling each panel around the body of the bag, in order to fully access the inner lining. We then unpicked and removed the old lining and used its parts as templates in cutting new pieces from a fresh piece of premium, pig skin leather — in a lighter colour, as requested by the customer in this case. In doing this, we recreated the features of the original lining, including an inner zipped pocket and the original Gucci badge.
Piping repair
We began by cleaning and conditioning the piping around the sides of the bag to remove any impurities and dirt from the surface of the leather — we did so while the bag remained deconstructed (during the lining replacement). We then sourced a fresh piece of plain black leather and wrapped the torn area with a thin leather patch that we then stitched into place alongside the existing leather piping. In this way, we were able to cover the exposed plastic interior of the piping, sealing up the torn leather on the exterior and reinforcing the piping there against further damage.
Strap mount repair
We replaced the missing strap mount with a fresh piece of leather that we stitched into place with a D-ring like the original.
