The boots

These R.M. Williams Craftsman boots had a large tear around the outside of the boot, just above the soles. When this customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to repair the torn leather by applying a leather patch to cover seal up the tear and reinforce the surrounding area.

Leather patching

We often see R.M. Williams boots crack and eventually tear around the sides of the toes, usually on the inside of each foot (i.e. the left side of the right foot, and the right side of the left foot) where the leather creases. In those cases, we can patch the leather from the inside of the boot to seal up the tear and help prevent further damage.

In this case, however, the torn leather could not simply be glued down or stitched back into place — the leather had not only torn but was no longer attached to the welt (the layer of leather that sits between the soles and the leather uppers) and a large piece of leather had come off entirely and was lost.

To repair this tear, we cut a piece a piece of leather — large enough to cover the entire area and then some. We used this leather as a patch, covering the tear and gluing down the loose leather against it before stitching it into place — specifically, we stitched one side of the leather patch into the welt and the other side in the original leather uppers of the boot.

While the exterior patch is visible on the exterior of the boot, the end result is one that fully repairs the tear, allowing the boots to continue to be used, and reinforces the leather around the tear to help prevent further damage.
