The boots

The leather uppers on these RM Williams Craftsman boots were heavily creased and starting to crack, especially around the vamp — where the boots tend to bend. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to clean and condition the leather to help prevent further damage and specially treat the leather to minimise the visibility of the damage to the leather.

Creasing on boots’ leather uppers is common and largely something to be reasonably expected with wear. However, when the creasing develops quickly on a brand new pair, it often suggests an improper fit on the wearer’s feet. And when the creasing develops on an older, worn pair of boots it is often a symptom of the leather becoming dry. In these latter cases, the creasing leather will eventually crack and form tears around the vamp.

Leather creasing repair

We started off by cleaning and conditioning the leather. This helps to remove layers of dirt and other impurities on the surface of the leather as well as to nourish the leather, making it more supple and less likely to continue cracking going forward. We then worked on carefully smoothing out the leather around the creases, in part by removing excess polish and loose layers of leather before replacing it with a leather filler. We then proceeded to re-dye and polish the leather to produce as clean a finish as possible.

It is of course important to note that the feasibility of this type of service, and the degree to which it would result in an improvement, depends ultimately on the condition of the leather before the treating takes place. For this reason, it is important to keep the leather on your boots healthy, though regular conditioning — how often this is needed depends on the age of the leather and how often the boots are worn, but generally speaking, we advise conditioning the leather every 3–4 months.
