The handbag

This Prada Galleria tote was thoroughly loved over the years, with the white saffiano leather looking dirty and discoloured and the wax around the top of the bag and edges of the shoulder strap worn right off. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to clean and condition the leather throughout the bag before changing the colour to black and then re-waxing the edges around the top of the bag and sides of the shoulder strap.

Changing the colour of this bag was not the only option available to the customer in this case. There was of course an opportunity to restore the original colour of the bag. Customers’ preferences vary in this respect, but the customer in this case chose to re-dye the leather to black to ensure that it wouldn’t so easily become discoloured in the future and on our advice that re-dyeing to a darker colour offers a superior result compared to painting the leather to restore the original colour.

Leather cleaning and conditioning

As with any leather restoration, we started off by cleaning the leather to remove any accumulated impurities on the surface — including the worn waxing, which had rubbed off onto the leather itself around the top of the bag and on the shoulder strap. We then conditioned the leather to nourish it and ensure it was ready to properly absorb our dye.

Leather colour change

We then proceeded to re-dye the leather to black, applying multiple coats and ample time in between to allow the colour to properly set. Having completed the dyeing process, we then treated the leather with a waterproofing / stain protection agent to seal in the dye.

Edge re-waxing

Having completely removed the old wax around the top rim of the bag and the sides of the shoulder strap and thoroughly cleaning and prepping the underlying leather, we proceeded to carefully re-wax the edges with a dense, black wax (or ‘edge paint’).
