The shoes
The soles and heels on these Loake Cromwell shoes were worn and in need of replacement. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to perform a full resole, replacing the rubber heel caps and leather soles with entirely new parts.
Full leather resole
These shoes were designed with a ‘Goodyear Welt’ construction — i.e. a layer of leather between the soles and uppers, allowing for the soles to be stitched into the welt, rather than the uppers, and so to be replaced as needed relatively easily.
We began by removing the heel caps and the heel blocks and then unstitching the soles from the welts. We then repaired the inner cork layer, which had been lightly worn into, and stitched into place a new pair of full-length leather soles. We carefully cut off excess leather and sanded around the edges of these new leather soles to produce smooth, clean edges. With the soles secured, we proceeded to stain them to a tan colour like that on the original soles and finally re-nailed the heel blocks into place alongside a new pair of durable Vibram Explosion rubber heel caps.
