The bag
The leather woven through the chain strap on this Chanel bag was heavily worn, with discolouration and tears in several areas. When this customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to replace the woven leather.
When the leather woven through these Chanel-style chain straps starts to wear, it will be gradually become discoloured and start to tear around where the leather bends the most. We can often repair the leather by recolouring discoloured leather and then glueing and/or stitching torn leather. In this case, the leather was a little too far gone to fully restore, and the customer preferred a fresh leather.
Strap replacement
We started off by removing the leather woven through the chain strap. We then sourced a suitable leather in a matching navy blue colour — in this case, we chose a Kangaroo leather, which is not quite a soft as Chanel’s lambskin leather but is nevertheless known for its strength and durability. We cut the leather and finished its edges to protect them, and then we carefully wove the leather through the chain, looping the leather at the ends with a hand stitch.
