The bag
The zipper on this Wanderers Travel Co backpack had become unusable, with the runner detached and the zipper teeth missing and damaged. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to repair the zipper by installing a ‘runner stop’.
Zipper repair
We can usually repair a zipper by adjusting or replacing the ‘runner’ — the metal piece that runs along the teeth of the zipper — provided that the zipper’s teeth and surrounding material are in tact. In this case, however, the zipper was missing at least one of its teeth and the zipper itself could not be replaced with a new zipper similar to the original in appearance (the colour of the surrounding material would have been off). And for this reason, adjusting or replacing the runner alone would not have helped.
The solution here was to install a ‘runner stop’ — pieces of metal we use to cover the zipper teeth at a point where we’d like to stop the runner from moving over. We installed this runner stop just ahead of that point at which the zipper teeth were missing, because allowing the runner to move over the missing teeth would cause it to come off its tracks. The runner stop took away a bit less than an inch of the zipper, but allows us to ensure the zipper was functional without sacrificing its appearance.
