The bag
This Louis Vuitton Hampstead shoulder bag was looking great, with the vachetta leather developing a nice patina. But the leather corners around the bottom of the bag, where it tends to brush up against the ground and other objects, were worn and discoloured. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to restore the leather by recolouring / refinishing it.
Vachetta leather (aka vegetal tanned leather) is a natural leather that starts off with a light creamy colour but naturally develops a patina, gradually darkening to a caramel colour, due to exposure to light and the elements. While we are often able to simply clean and condition vachetta leather in order to restore it, or else replace the leather corners with entirely new leather, the customer in this case opted to keep the existing leather but restore it — even recolouring the leather if need be.
Leather restoration
We started by cleaning and conditioning the leather corners, and then using a leather filler to smooth the leather in those areas where the outer layers of the leather had worn through. We then used a special leather paint to recolour / refinish the leather to a colour that matched the patina on the rest of the bag.
