The bag
This YSL Muse bag was in serious need of a refurbishment, with the white patent leather yellowing and the softening of the leather around the bag causing it to lose its shape. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to reshape the bag before cleaning, conditioning and then recolouring the patent leather to black.
Colour change
We began by cleaning and conditioning the patent leather throughout the exterior of the bag to remove any surface dirt and impurities and nourish the leather. We then re-dyed the leather, carefully applying a black dye in multiple thin, even layers.
Specialist leather paints can be used to restore or change the colours of some leathers. The use of these paints allows us to aim for a wider variety of colours and to produce colours closer to those aimed for. However, these contain pigments that sit on the surface of the leather rather than change the colour of the leather itself, and also have the effect of concealing some of the leather’s original finish. So we made sure to use a dye in this case, allowing us to change the colour of the leather without losing any of the patent leather’s original glossy finish.
Reshape
When we see a once-structured leather bag start to sag, it is usually the result of the leather’s natural ageing causing it to soften. In order to restore the shape of the bag, we reinforce the leather around targeted parts of the bag — in this case, on the left and right sides of the bag. We started by undoing the inner lining and discretely firming up the areas that had become weak. Once we were happy with the bag’s shape, we carefully re-sealed the lining.
