The sneakers
These Gucci Velcro Strap sneakers were well-loved, with the soles cracking and broken due to wear and tear. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to re-craft the shoes with an entirely new pair of custom-made soles.
Full resole
These sneakers were not designed to be easily resoled, as the original soles were custom made to fit the footbeds and uppers of the shoes perfectly and are not available for use in aftermarket repairs. In order to replace the soles, we needed to custom make our own soles to fit the shoes.
We started off by removing the original soles and then cleaning away the old glue and the accumulated dirt / debris left behind. We then selected a suitable ‘rand’ (a strip of rubber that ensures the new soles connect to the uppers with no gaps in between) and glued that into place around the perimeter of each shoe. We then stitched into place a pair of full-length rubber midsoles firmly into each footbed. These gave us a flat base against which we could then adhere into place a short EVA wedge (to ensure the new soles would sit at a slight gradient) alongside a new pair of durable rubber outer soles. With these new parts in place, we then carefully sanded around the edges, in line with the shape of the original footbeds on these shoes.
While this sort of re-craft is significantly more complicated than a regular resole, the process helps to ensure the new soles perfectly fit the uppers and to also significantly enhance durability — in particular, the installation of midsoles allows for significantly easier and economical resoles of the shoes as needed going forward.
