The bag
This Gucci Monogram GG Supreme Tote was well looked after, but starting to show clear signs of wear and tear, especially around the corners, top binding and handles. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to protect the corners, reattach the torn handle, and replace the top binding.
Leather corner installation
The Gucci monogram canvas was heavily worn and even torn through around the bottom corners of this bag, due to abrasion with the ground and other surfaces with which the bag came into contact. This is a common problem for which we generally offer 2 options for solutions:
The first option is to deconstruct the bag and cut off the damaged canvas, effectively getting rid of the damaged parts and making the bag slightly smaller as a result.
The second option is to install a series of leather pockets, stitching them into place around the corners and thereby protecting the canvas from further damage.
In this case, the customer opted for the latter option. We installed 4 leather pockets / corners, each made from a sturdy brown leather chosen for its similarity to the rest of the leather on the bag. These were tucked into the seams around the bottom of the bag and stitched into place around their perimeters. We also crafted these corners to be as small as possible and so avoid detracting from the bag’s original look.
Handle repair
The handles on this bag were in decent shape, but one of the leather loops connecting one of the handle’s ends to the bag had torn. We were able to reinforce the torn leather from within and then re-stitch the leather into place.
Leather binding replacement
The top binding on this bag was severely worn down and discoloured — as is common with regular wear. While leather bindings offer some aesthetic appeal, they also provide extra protection to the material edges of the bag, and so they perform an important function. Nevertheless, leather bindings tends to show the first signs of significant wear on otherwise healthy looking bags.
We began by unstitching the damaged binding from the top edge of the bag. We then crafted a new leather binding with the same dimensions from a fresh piece of premium brown leather like the original, and carefully stitched that into place.
