The bag
The canvas and vachetta leather around the exterior of this Louis Vuitton Keepall was heavily worn, with the leather in particular dry and cracking and one of the handles torn. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to replace all of the vachetta leather throughout the bag with custom made parts.
Vachetta leather replacement
We began by deconstructing the entire bag — unstitching the various pieces of canvas and removing all of the leather and hardware. We then used the leather parts as templates in cutting new pieces of leather, with the same shape and size as the original pieces. This included the handles, the leather trim down each face of the bag, the piping around the sides of the bag, and the leather tabs at each end of the top zipper.
Vachetta leather like that used on this bag (and many other Louis Vuitton items) gradually darkens over time and develops a patina that is unique to every item. The replacement leather we used in this case is vachetta leather like the original but entirely fresh in the sense that it had not yet formed a patina — allowing this restored bag to gradually develop its own patina, as brand new Louis Vuitton bags are supposed to.
We then proceeded to reconstruct the bag from scratch, including the new leather parts alongside the retained original parts, stitching everything back together with a matching yellow thread and then finishing the (otherwise exposed / unprotected) edges of the leather parts with wax and a red edge paint.
