The sneakers
These 1991 Jordan 1s were in good shape for their age, but the soles were worn, and the leather uppers were dirty and discoloured. When the customer reached out for free diagnosis/quote, we offered to perform a resole and colour restoration.
Colour restoration
We are often able to get great results by cleaning and treating stains on sneakers. But in this case, the leather itself had lost its colour, and the rubber sidewalls of the soles had yellowed — so a colour restoration was needed.
First, we cleaned and conditioned the shoes to remove accumulated dirt and lighten the stains as much as possible. This also allowed us to strip the finish on the uppers in preparation for the colour restoration work. Once the leather was dry, we custom mixed red and white colours based on the original colours and used these to recolour / refinish the leather uppers and the sidewalls of the soles. We also recoloured the Nike ticks to black. The final step was to apply a protective coating to seal in the colour and provide a barrier against future wear and tear.
Resole
Because of the way these shoes are constructed, a full replacement of the soles and midsoles is not possible. The best option for maintaining the style and keeping the shoes in a useable condition is to repair the existing soles.
First, we built up the midsoles where they’d been worn into around the back with white rubber, to level them off. We then installed a new pair of durable rubber soles over the top.
