The shoes
These Christian Louboutin So Kate shoes are an iconic pair of ‘red bottoms’ but had seen better days, with the original red leather soles heavily worn, the heel tips destroyed and the heel blocks scratched and torn just above the heel tips. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to replace the heel tips, re-cover the heel blocks with new leather and install a pair of thin red protective rubber soles made especially for Louboutins.
Sole repair and protection
We first repaired the existing soles, buffing out the scratches on the leather soles as much as possible to level them out. We then installed a pair of protective, non-slip rubber soles in a red colour made especially for the ‘red bottoms’ on Louboutins. These soles are quite thin (about the width of a 10 cent coin) and are sliced thin at the ends to sit flush with the original leather soles.
We generally recommend the protective rubber soles on Louboutins because, although the leather soles can be restored in some cases (provided the leather is not already too damaged), restoring the leather soles is generally of no use because they will very quickly become damaged again. The protective rubber soles offer far greater longevity for your shoes without sacrificing Christian Louboutins’ signature aesthetics.
Heel tip replacement and heel block re-covering
Where heel blocks like these are damaged, we sometimes offer to repair the leather around the heel blocks — especially where the damage is reasonably minor or the leather is impossible to match. We do this by stretching out and then carefully glueing down the loose leather as cleanly as possible. This does not result in a full restoration of the heel blocks, but helps to reinforce the leather and prevent the loose leather from continuing to tear.
Because of the extent of damage on this pair, we recommended re-covering the heel blocks with new leather. This involved removing the old leather and re-wrapping the heel blocks with a pair of pieces cut to shape from a similar leather.
We then proceeded to replace the heel tips (the rubber ends at the base of each heel) with entirely new ones.
