SoleHeeled offers convenient and affordable Fendi bag restorations by Australia’s best craftsmen, with free shipping to your door. This case study outlines how we recently restored a customer’s Fendi bag.
The bag
This Fendi Peekaboo bag was looking a little worn, with the hardware discoloured and the leather’s patina producing an inconsistent colour around the bag. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to clean, condition and custom recolour the exterior leather as well as polish and re-plate the gold hardware.
Hardware re-plating
We began by cleaning the hardware to remove any dirt / debris from the surface of the metal. We then used special equipment to re-plate the metal, bonding a layer of 24k gold to the hardware’s surface. We repeated this process in multiple thin layers to achieve a consistent and long-lasting restoration of the hardware’s original colour. We finally sealed the metal with a finishing agent, to lock in the plating and protect the hardware going forward.
Leather colour restoration
We began by cleaning and condition the leather throughout the exterior of the bag before treating the stains with specialist stain remover. This helped to nourish the leather as well as remove the accumulated dirt / impurities on the surface of the leather and some of the lighter stains. However, the darker stains remained set in place, particularly around the edges of the bag.
So we proceeded to custom mix a colour based on the leather’s original colour and used that to recolour the leather around the bag’s exterior. As with the re-plating work, we applied this colour in thin, even coats and left the leather plenty of time to dry / rest between layers. We do this to achieve a consistent finish, and prevent the colour from cracking / drying out.
The leather on this bag is a semi-natural leather, and so the application of new colour to the leather’s surface resulted in the concealment of both stains and the natural patina that the leather had developed. This produced a consistency in colour across the bag, allowing the bag to look less aged / much fresher.
